This reminds us what a difficult assignment the first England test is for the new coach.

As a non-saffa, I am extremely worried but also excited at what Meyer may accomplish with the depth that SA obviously has. This is a great first initiative I feel, and I only pray that he is left alone by the various parties (I can only go by saffa comments on this website as to the level of interference that may come to pass). A strong SA side is a great thing for world rugby, especially when they focus more on their overall game rather the pure physical intimidation (which admittedly plays a part). A strong SA side v the Kiwis will be alight to behold.

Of those there - on current form - I hope to see Coenie Oosthuizen, Adriaan Strauss and Johan Goosen in the Bok 22.

This is very clever.

Not only is Meyer managing to avoid disrupting the SA Super Rugby teams by making use of the bye weeks, but he is also acknowledging and encouraging ALL South African players who are busy playing well - without having to hand out free Springbok caps.

I have no doubt that it would be a highly motivating experience for all the youngsters and fringe players involved. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them raise their games - and it might even stop some from going overseas.

It also leaves his options wide open. He can get his basic planning and preparation in now, without having to commit to a specific 2 or 3 players per position. So by the time the June tests come rolling around, he can pick the best, on-form players. And if players get injured between then and now, he has many more who are already on the same page.

It also means the Bulls and Stormers players don't have to sit in a room together in the week they plan on killing each other..!

It's a smart move, whichever way you look at it.

@Bones7 - I'd always want an experienced player in the camp - he's a well thought of captain at the end of the day!

seems like a good idea, just not sure how many of these players will actually be used. I count 5 tops

Seems like a good idea, having a look at a few more players. Don't know why Juan Smith is going though considering he's said he won't play this year, it's a bit cruel if anything!
