Matt Giteau: Quits Australia
Matt Giteau opted not to return to Australia after realising he had no chance of a recall to the Wallabies squad with Robbie Deans as coach.
The 31-year-old was sensationally left out of last year's World Cup squad by Deans - who had originally made him his first choice fly-half in 2008 before his dramatic fall from grace with the Kiwi coach - despite still being in top form and with 92 caps under his belt since making his debut in 2002.
Giteau - who played in the 2003 World Cup final loss to England - signed for Toulon and enjoyed a terrific first season there, in which they reached the Top 14 final only to lose to Toulouse, and was only too willing to re-sign a new two-year contract last month.
"Yes, I have brought a curtain down on my chances of ever playing for my country again," he said.
"But with the coach who is in charge of them at the moment, I don't have much of a chance of being called up in any case.
"Even if I had returned to Australia, a condition of being available again for selection, I would maybe not have been recalled.
"Thus I decided to stay at Toulon, where I am flourishing. But I remain a devoted supporter of the Australian team and I still have a lot of friends in the squad.
"After next Saturday's game against Clermont, I will leave for a fortnight's holiday in Australia with my wife and son."
Giteau, who won two Super 12 titles with the Brumbies early in his career, said he had sympathy for fly-half Quade Cooper, who was heavily fined and received a suspended three-match ban for lashing out on social media at the "toxic" environment within the national squad and the defensive style of Deans.
"Quade (he would not have been fit for the present tour because he is injured) wanted to express how unhappy he was," said Giteau.
"He has since apologised. I also experienced difficult moments at international level, I didn't make the last World Cup. Robbie is as he is. The coaches like certain players and others less. It has always been the case. I don't enter into the plans of Robbie."
Giteau said that the Wallabies - who open their November Test series against France at the Stade de France on Saturday - would miss several players, especially Will Genia.
"It is true that they are missing several players but the one they will miss most is Will Genia, he is a huge loss," said Giteau.
"His replacement Nick Phipps plays really well but Genia is the sort of player that no side can afford to lose."
Giteau, who in between two spells with the Brumbies had two years with their rivals Western Force, said that he had not really had to think too hard about signing on again for Toulon, despite being coveted by several other clubs both back in Australia and England.
"It was easy because I am so happy here!," he said.
"And even more importantly my family are happy as well. That is the first reason.
"Also Toulon is a great team which has the possibility of winning several trophies.
"In my head I had two options: to stay in France or return to Australia. I never even thought of trying my luck in England for example.
"But then why leave when I am feeling so well here? Therefore I chose to stay in France and that meant with Toulon. When it came down to it it was a relatively easy decision to take.

big loss to Australia this. Giteau is a fine player, one that Australia could do with right now.

Its revisionist rubbish to say Giteau was dumped "in top form"; he had been playing badly for many months and lots of people felt he was well past his best. Just because it suits you to right an article that paints him as the wronged party, doesn't mean you can make stuff up to strengthen your case. This is a good site, please up your game.

Methinks its time for Deans to step aside in favour of Ewen. We can't have a Kiwi coaching the Wallabies (in much the same way as the Kiwis wouldn't want an Aussie coaching them either... rightfully so!)

@PREEST
Some of us will never forget or forgive what Deans and Mitchell did with Christian Cullen. Can't deny that Deans has kept Australia at number 2 in world rugby but can't stand the prick. And don't get me started on Mitchell!!

I thought the Wallabies are the most strict on the 'no overseas-based players rule'. Anyway, Gits should have known about that..if my assumption is correct, that is.

@ Startledwombat - Nick Evans was far from not being wanted by the All Blacks.
I understand he left of his own accord as he didn't particulalry want the limelight that came with being an All Black and that a lot of his friends were on OEs.

@ArmchairGeneral, Ahhh, understood. He just has so much talent. I wish he played down south where I watch mostly. Maybe I should watch more Top14.

Seems that he's at an impasse but a good one as far as French Rugby is concerned as he is respected here. He may have made mistakes in the past as I am sure has Deans, but to not have a player of that quality available is a a great pity. Managers as well as players sometimes have to admit humble pie and see sense. I get the feeling that Deans is fairly intransigent and its my way or no way. Not always a recipe for success.

He's a fabulous player but the truth of it is he wasn't playing well at international level when he fell out of favour. Aside from the Murrayfield disaster there was a similar miss from bang in front against England in Sydney that contributed to another narrow loss. Add that to a fairly evident personality clash and isn't hard to understand why Deans was persuaded to look at the next generation of inside backs.

Rumour has it he was also left out because there was a lot of friction between him and the rest of the squad because he's a bit of an odd character. Don't know how true that is but from comments I've heard from him I can believe it.

@Newj4a: I think by saying he can't get a spot because of Deans so he won't go home shows he is not a humble guy. But I could be wrong. McCaw has even said Deans is a bit "my way or the highway".

Gits was selected as "the general" by Deans when he first arrived and what did Gits deliver? Certainly no silverware. He went MIA more often than not against the Kiwis and one of his enduring contributions was to miss a kick in front of the posts that would have saved the Wallabies from that embarrassing loss at Murrayfield. So if Gits was not in Deans' future plans, it's plainly because he failed to deliver when handed the general's baton in the past. Of course he's flourishing in Toulon. It's the south of France with no pressure. Have fun mate.

He wasn't at the top of his game, hence him being dropped. While I thought Gits was a great inside centre, I do wonder how much of that was the fact he was playing outside Larkham and inside Mortlock, it would be pretty hard to be a bad player in between those guys. I lost any respect I had for him when he ran off to the force for his money.
Robbie Deans did the right thing, as he did with Rocky Elsom. He is doing pretty well with the limited resources he has.

@ArmchairGeneral. who says "Gits has proved quite nicely why Deans doesn't like him." I don't follow you. Please explain what you mean. He seems like a decent bloke, Deans does too for that matter.

I keep wondering why this couldn't by Giteau be handled with the same grace and dignity that Nick Evans handled not being wanted for the All Blacks.

yep thats the problem allright it's Dingo, why because G Smith and some other twits on this story have said so. God help us when the players or the wannabe players run the team. But you have to give it to these guys on here they have just realised that coaches don't like everyone, surprise, surprise, well done boys.
