Glasgow clinch 1872 Cup success

29th December 2012 18:00

Sean Maitland

First score: Sean Maitland

Tries from Sean Maitland, Ruaridh Jackson and Henry Prygos gave Glasgow victory over Edinburgh in the second leg of the 1872 Cup at Murrayfield.

After winning the first game 23-14, Glasgow continued their form, going into the break 16-3 ahead through Maitland and Jackson's tries, while Peter Horne added two penalties.

Greg Laidlaw kicked a penalty for the home team with Roddy Grant and Tim Visser going over in the second half, but Pyrgos' score sealed the victory for the Warriors.

The hosts were searching for an early score to reduce the deficit from the first game the previous week, but it was the visitors that struck first.

Excellent continuity and good hands sent Maitland over for his first try for the club.

The Gunners then hit back through a Laidlaw penalty and the Warriors saw Horne sin-binned. But the Murrayfield-based outfit couldn't profit and it was Gregor Townsend's men that were next to score.

With Piers Francis looking to quicken the tempo, Jackson intercepted the fly-half's attempted pass and raced clear. Successive penalties towards the end of the half from Horne then extended Glasgow's advantage to 13 points at the interval.

The Warriors came out with the same vigour in the second period and, after further pressure on the Edinburgh line, Alan Jacobsen was sin-binned for a cynical infringement.

With the prop off the field, the Warriors chose to go for the scrum which resulted in Pyrgos touching down to take the score to 21-3.

Although the hosts threatened a comeback through tries from Grant and Visser, the visitors held on.
