RiverBlues77 - simple answer - Romania qualify for RWC. Currently ranked 18th in the world - not bad if you accept the IRB figure of less than 10000 players in the country. Georgia ranked 15th, Namibia back in 22nd.

I live in Thailand, ranked 60th, with double the player numbers of Romania; means nothing, they would also need to qualify.

It's frustrating to see how these small rugby-mad countries are ignored by the IRB.

Rugby is also a major game in Georgia and in Senegal - in both countries big games can draw 40,000+ spectators. These are three potential resources for the game that would extend the reach of the sport and open up new markets and new stores of talent.

I am sure IRB funding is limited, but at the least they could work on development in those countries and send talent scouts in to source talent for franchises and clubs. Instead we see countries like Namibia and Romania at the RWC - nations where big games are watched by a couple hundred people.

On the iRB rugby program, they said there are 160 clubs, with 22,000 players, in the capital alone.

Don't know how strong the Namibian team was, but the TV coverage showed running rugby at it's best.

Thats an awesome scoreline... clearly defense was left out of the game-plan. I remember SA vs NZ about ten years ago came up with a similar score... like to see it again. I was shocked to hear it was their national sport. With a population of 20 million they could pose a real threat with the right funding.

I can remember Frank Hadden once saying (in justification for a rubbish performance from Scotland) that there are more registered rugby players in Madagascar than there are in Scotland. Unfortunately because they are such a poor country they have no professional scene which means that they'll always struggle to capitalise on the popularity of the sport there. Surely they are a prime candidate for the IRB to step in and try to create something a bit more structured.
