@ rugby_rockstar A lot of quality full backs and wings are interchangeable, I take it you were not a fan of Lewsey & Robinson in a similar situation?

Could this be a weak attempt to try and goad the boks into playing more expansively? A loose broken up game would suit England more.

rugby_rockstar- Bring in the regions?? I take it you don't support a club then because anyone who does would never in a million years want to change to regional rugby!

You're going way over the top there rugby_rockstar
Look at it in perspective.
Brown is in excellent form and Foden has the attributes to be a world class wing.
Look at NZ during the WC for instance. They have probably the biggest pool of quality outside backs in the world, yet they selected Sonny Bill, Kahui and Jane as their main wingers.
And trust me you don't want regions, that would destroy English rugby.

I'm sorry ArmchairGeneral, I don't normally post on England sites but those are disgraceful comments. I cannot think of anything worse than deliberately injuring a player. Boks are hard and uncompromising, what you're suggesting is way beyond the pale. Dear me.

@ rugby_rockstar - I appreciate what you're saying, but we do have and are developing our wingers. Think Strettle, Wade, Biggs, Sharples, Monye, Garvey, etc. Some experience and a lot of potential. But this isn't about picking the best wingers, it's about picking the best players to face the Boks.
We're all expecting the Boks to have a strong kicking game and Foden is better under a high ball than any of our wingers. Brown has the busting-ability and Foden has the pace for a great counter-attacking game. That's why he's picked, not because a 15 is the best 11.
(He's also played on the wing before, so isn't a complete novice).

In an interview I saw last night, Rowntree said that Marler had grown up in every way. I think this is true. Marler also said that he now realises that he has a role to play in the team and it's not all about going out there and trying to hurt people. I think this speaks volumes.
Marler and Mike "Mr Angry" Brown used to be real liabilities, due to their lack of discipline. But CO'S at Quins, reinforced by England, have made a massive impact for both of them. They're now great players - still tough and won't take a backward step, but less of a liability.
I like the look of the back three. If, as JayStarr et al suggest, the Boks don't have a Plan B, we'll be ok. WE can collect their high balls and run it from deep. We've got the ball carriers and the forwards who can get to the breakdown quickly. But if this is all just a ruse and they don't play a kicking game, it could be us kicking ourselves...
Let's just hope they're not trying to double-bluff us!

for starters Brown has earned that 15 shirt though honest graft, but he's not fast enough to play on the wing. foden is fast enough to play on the wing, so out of the two players you play foden out of position. England (i'm emglish) should be looking at WHY we haven't found two decent world class out and out wingers? that just smacks of incompetance. biggest player base in the world and the best winger we can find is a full back. Says it all really. you don;t beat the best with slap happy attitudes. if the domestic scene is not delivering then bring in the regions. the football model isn't working for either england or france. you can't have club vs country and expect to compete with countries who put country first.

I'd like to think that Brwn is a quality 15 who has been selected on merit. High balls should pose no real problem to him.

My worry is the ref, a total idiot who has no clue about the way rugby should be played. it will turn the game into a lottery.

It makes sense. Strettle and Monye are not natural finishers and Wade isn't ready yet. Foden could even be like a Cory Jane type wing, he certainly has the skill set

At the same time if the Boks get dirty England must not be bullied especially on a tour. Expect Bok shoulders to heads and headbutts gouging in the pileups. They'll be planning it for the welcoming game. Plus they'll have decided on someone to put out of the tour. A position with a strong player but without depth. Cole perhaps or Robshaw.

With brown at full back first test, any team would adopt up and under barrage on him, unlucky for him this is boks strength.
On plus side if he hold up he has gone a long way to staking a claim to the position.
I have an picture in my mind of him catching ball and frans Steyn simultaneously, not looking to good for him.
Intriguing game ahead, boks by 3 to 6
