It really frustrates me that we are loosing the Currie Cup because of what the Aussies want. NZ and SA have a healthy domestic system. Instead of putting the rubbish in place that they have for the Super Rugby tournament, they should look to develop their own domestic competition and have Super Rugby as a separate entity.
We should get 6 teams for an Australian domestic league, do away with franchises for Super Rugby and have 8 teams in the Currie Cup. Top 5 from the year before go through to Super Rugby and play home and away against 4 Aussie, 5 NZ and 2 Argentine teams. 4 Groups of 4 home and away with the top 2 going through to the Quaters, Semi's and Finals. More akin to how the Heineken Cup fits into the Northern Hemisphere season.
This saves the Currie Cup and NPC. It delivers an Aussie domestic league. It gets the Argentines into the game at club level (they could be based in SA as with their Las Pampas team in the Vodacom Cup) mirroring the international attempt to get them into the Tri-Nations.
Thoughts?

6 teams competing for 4 playoff spots just doesnt sit right with me. I guess we'll have to wait even longer to see EP in the currie cup, because theres never going to be another promoted side in the tourney.
I bet the first division will be better in 2012 and that should be called the Currie Cup from now on. They have just broken the hearts of all the smaller unions and their fans.
First PdV and now this, I guess anything is possible in south africa

I hope Australian rugby is appreciating the sacrifices South African rugby has to make for their sake... (and I'm sure NZ rugby too).
Although I do think a bit of streamlining is a good thing in today's rugby...
