Player of the Year: Conrad Smith
At the end of a busy year, we pick out the star performers from around the globe for 2012's Planet Rugby Awards.
Player of the Year: Conrad Smith
Despite not being recognised by the IRB, Conrad 'Snake' Smith is our Player of the Year. With seven tries in Super Rugby and another two in Tests in 2012, Smith has been a force on the scoresheet but it's his all-round contributions that earn him so much praise.
Smith made an assist in all three November Internationals he participated in, finishing with a total of six for the year. In an impressive career, the Hurricanes stalwart is at his peak. When it comes to creativity and vision, he is one of the best in the game.
Newcomer of the year: Eben Etzebeth
Julian Savea might have scored twelve tries in his first nine Tests, but young Stormer Eben Etzebeth gets our vote after a breakthrough year. Hailed as the new Bakkies Botha as much for his physicality on the field as his dubious disciplinary record, the best is yet to come from this bruising lock.
Coach of the Year: Steve Hansen
Hansen has taken over the All Blacks from Graham Henry and in many ways made them better than the side that won the Rugby World Cup last year. From the 60-0 rout of Ireland to not losing a match in the Rugby Championship, Hansen has introduced fresh talent whilst getting the best out of his side.
Six Nations Player of the Year: Leigh Halfpenny
Wales had a whole host of standout performers in the Six Nations this year, but Leigh Halfpenny has been outstanding with the boot all year for Wales, despite a run of seven consecutive losses since their Grand Slam success. His performances surely been sufficient to guarantee him a seat on the plane with the Lions.
Rugby Championship Player of the Year: Kieran Read
The world's best number eight produced one of his best year's in an All Black shirt, skippering the side against Italy but losing out to team-mate Richie McCaw for the NZ Player of the Year award. His man of the match awards speak for themselves.
Super Rugby Player of the Year: Andre Taylor
The young Hurricane was in outstanding form for his side in every game this year. Lethal going forward, Taylor finished as the joint top try scorer along with Bjorn Basson in an outstanding year.
Heineken Cup Player of the Year (2011-2012): Jonathan Sexton
A close-run call with his Leinster and Ireland team-mate Cian Healy, but last season saw Sexton in imperious form as he guided Leinster to a third Heineken Cup title in four years. The number one contender for the Lions fly-half shirt.
Try of the year: Joe Pietersen Stormers v Highlanders
A length of the field effort from Stormers full-back Joe Pietersen was our pick for Try of the Year. Fielding a box kick in his own 22, Pietersen flew through tackles from the Highlanders before being brought down on halfway. Pietersen got the ball back two phases later, interchanging with Juan de Jongh and Gio Aplon before chipping over the defence to score.
Match of the Year: Blues 34, Chiefs 41, Super Rugby Round 15
Edging out the Heineken Cup semi-final between Clermont and Leinster was this humdinger of a Super Rugby clash. Eight tries, with Chiefs winger Asaeli Tikoirotuma grabbing four including a length of the field stunner for his hat-trick in the second half, made this match stand out above the rest.
Outstanding Performance of the Year: England v New Zealand, December
The performance that nobody expected. After a couple of poor performances against Australia and South Africa, England racked up 38 points against New Zealand thanks to second-half tries from Brad Barritt, Chris Ashton and Manu Tuilagi to stop the All Blacks finishing 2012 unbeaten.
Top Try Scorer: Julian Savea
Savea scored more Test tries than anyone else in 2012, with 12 to his name by the end of the year in a fantastic breakthrough year. Add in a further nine scores in Super Rugby, and the young Hurricane has been on fire.
Golden Boot: Ayumu Goromaru (Japan)
If Leigh Halfpenny was second and Dan Carter was third, then who scored the most points in Tests in 2012? The answer is Japan's Goromaru, with the 26-year-old full-back racking up 158 points in nine matches, including six tries.
Hang Up Your Boots Award: Nathan Sharpe
Would he ever retire? Nathan Sharpe's continued postponement of his rugby career made you wonder whether we would see him take on the Lions next year, but it's not to be. After 116 Tests, the Wallaby great has bid farewell.
Quote of the Year: Mike Tindall
Based on the Quotes of the Year we published last week, this understatement from Mike Tindall on his antics at the Rugby World Cup.
"Obviously it wasn't ideal for me to end up as hammered as I was."
Weight-Watchers Award: Piri Weepu
Everybody knew it, Keven Mealamu even came out and said it, so for appearing a tad out of condition at the beginning of the Super Rugby season Piri Weepu is the lucky recipient of this award.
The "I Showed You All" Award: Mark Hammett
With Ma'a Nonu, Andrew Hore and Hosea Gear and many more departing Wellington during the off-season, nobody gave the Hurricanes a hope in 2012. Yet they had a fantastic Super Rugby season, winning ten of their matches and producing plenty of memorable tries.
MTV Music Award: Saracens
Not keen to be like any other club in the world, Saracens turned to their talented singers Matt Stevens and Kelly Brown to come up with a new tune for the club. The reaction has been lukewarm.

If Saracens get a music award, it should be for their pathetic and shameful use of music on their PA to try and drown out the traveling Munster support.

well said carpelone! Etzebeth may not be everyones cup of tea, but jonesy2 comments on him are ridiculous. Newcomer of the year award is not an overstatement of his impact on the season.

Since your knowledge of rugby is really mediocre, it could be well the case that Etzebeth will be the number 1 for the next let's say 12 years. He eats Romano and Timani for breakfast, without spitting the bones.

ok i was being kind before but i will just say it, etzabeth is already the most overrated player in the world. not even a top 10 lock. keep on thinking he is imposing and all the rest of it but he is just petulant and not a physical threat to a player like timani or romano.

Jonathan Davies is the second best 13 together with Tuilagi, good call.

Out of interest, Gregor Paul in the NZ Herald picks Jonathan Davies at 13, saying that Conred Smith 'ran out of steam in the final weeks', an accurate comment I think, but I'd still place him first for the season over all.

APV1.
I know what you are aiming to.
The most mediocre post, right?
Happy Xmas, mate.

After watching sexton play clermont these past 2 weeks lets hope the lions pick him as a starting ten....if he couldn't kick you would wonder what his role was....without an odriscoll to straighten he looked very average. The force would be the only provincial side in Australia that he would be guaranteed a start.
This lions year will be unreal!

PR - will there be any "Posters of The Year" Awards?
Funniest?
Angriest?
Most bizarre?
Most prolific?
That sort of thing...

Agree on Conrad Smith. He had only a bad game this year, the last one, underestimating Barrit and going to cover on Tuilagi in advance. Catching butterflies...
Apart from that, he was outstanding with the Hurricanes, the award I showed you all given to Hammet should be divided in two.
Conrad Smith is a legend.
Agree on Etzebeth, this would be around for years and set new standards for locks.
It seems to me that most of the teams sacrifice inches to smaller but more dynamic locks. Etzebeth has all the quality being 6 and 6. A monster.

Boerewors Award of the Year.
This must go to Frans Steyn. Frans, train, get fit and you will never pick injuries.
However, a final between Frans and Piri in a pie shop should be a cracker.

"Rugby Championship Player of the Year: Kieran Read

I must have missed the Italy games, In the Rugby Championship !!!
NHsaints:
Was the only game you saw Hooper the England game ? Even when Aus lost 22-0 to NZ he had a great game himself. Hooper is not just keeping out the best 7 in the world he also made the third best McCaw look like an old man.
Jonesy2:
Hooper had more man of the match awards in super and international than Etezbeth, Aus with all their injuries finished 2nd in the RC thanks mainly to Hooper, he also won player of the tournament in the u21 last year (Etezbeth also played). But Hooper is an Aussie and not considered ! Lol
Any winger would have scored as many as Savea had they been on the wing of a very good side like the ABs. Did he score three in the 60-0 win ? Only 3 ! Man. N

Obviously subjective but have to strongly disagree with the comment "Wales had a whole host of standout performers in the Six Nations this year" -- like many (non BBC & other media observers) I took the view that Wales played well as a team and yet could easily have ended up with a defeat to Ireland and a draw to England ... but we were fimly told that "good sides win when others don't" rather than Wales winning a rather fortunate slam ... The next 7 games provided the true state of affairs: good enought performances to win twice in Oz but failed and an autumn series to forget. So no, Wales didn't have "a whole host of standout performers in the Six Nations", that part was just created by all that hype!
That said - halfpenny as 6Ns player of the year? sounds reasonable ....!

Eben Etzebeth's "DUBIOUS DISCIPLINARY RECORD" !? It only exists in your imagination! Most English backs have a worse disciplinary record than Etzebeth this year..! That 2-week suspension for the "head butt" was one of the biggest citing jokes of the year - so don't even try and bring that up. Other than that he probably had ONE yellow card... Stop inventing a bad reputation for this poor guy. He is a good player - and that is all he is. He is no more aggressive or "dirty" than any other international no.4 lock.
Other than that, I agree with you about Conrad Smith... But I don't think you elaborated enough on the increcible job he did with a team of young Hurricanes. So many people thought they might end dead last this year, yet they nearly made the play-offs after being the most devastating attacking team in the tournament - with Conrad Smith leading from the front. The confidence and leadership he gave that team was incredible. He deserves your award 100%.
And I'm VERY glad that you finally gave Andre Taylor some recognition. He was the best full-back in the world from February to August, yet nobody nominated him in their teams of the year!
As for match of the year, I'm going to be biased here and and say it was the Currie Cup final !

Got to agree with NHSaints on this one, Etzebeth hasn't had a bad game all year and completely owned his position. Hooper didn't come into the international scene until later in the year with Pocock injured and whilst good, cannot be considered as dominant as Etzebeth.
Further to that, as much as Savea had a great season, he is still not the complete package. Most AB supporters I know (including myself) were pretty relieved when Hansen dropped him and selected Gear for the SA test. It's not just about the number of tries on the sheet.
I would however put Steffon Armitage down as a close runner up to Piri.....
Seriously, including best newcomer, I can't fault these at all.

jonesy2....HOOPER? Ha! Hooper has been nothing on Etzebeth this year, sure hooper has been good but people are talking about the SA second row being the best in the world all over again just because of Eben, he's a monster and nobody in the world has the quality or physicality to come and take his shirt from him.
