The 28-year-old started from the bench in the Six Nations of the following year but after impressing in the first two games earned starts for the remaining three games.
He played three games during the World Cup campaign of '07 and played a big role in the Grand Slam-winning team the following year, starting matches against Italy and Ireland.
But by 2009 a place in the starting XV was his, and despite the Welsh failing to retain their title Rees did enough to earn the third spot on the Lions plane.
However, while likely to play in one or two of the midweek games he will need to impress if he is to make the match-day 22.
