Combative Wales number eight Andy Powell will hope to thrive on the hard pitches in South Africa.
Andy Powell announced himself at international level with a superb man-of-the-match display on debut in Wales' 20-15 defeat to South Africa in Cardiff last November.
The powerful number eight took a circuitous route to the top via stints with Newport, Beziers, Scarlets and Cardiff, and has had to fight his way back from serious injury to both shoulders.
The 27-year-old is noted for his hard-running style and ability to break the gain line, he relishes taking the ball into contact and makes little effort to avoid oncoming tacklers, preferring instead to run straight into - and sometimes over - them.
After sitting out the entire 2007-08 campaign following surgery on his left shoulder, Powell emerged as an irresistible force at the base of the Cardiff scrum at the start of the following season.
His reward was a debut against the world champion Springboks and he has not looked back since with seven further Test appearances in the intervening five months culminating in his Lions selection.
